Research- who's done this before (conceptwise)

This is a Japan Railway company's commercial that promote a Bullet Trrain journey to Kyoto (a traditional ancient city).
This is not animation, so it may different from what I will create visually. However, what I learned from this commercial is its concept.

It's just beautiful by shooting the ancient city, but at the same time it is sending a message for busy modern people to rest a while, and go to the quiet and spiritual trip.

JR TVcommercial

=Translation (the first half) =
Sound of steps

The narrator: I just notice that there is a place where I can hear my own steps during daytime.

I would like to invite you who is always saying, "I am busy..busy.."

to here.

Caption: "Let's go to Kyoto"

To find out a beauty of quietness is based on Zen thought, and the spiritual experience is what I want to address in my project.

Research-textile

Collection of Japanese paper and kimono textiles.
According to the prior research, the four motief was likely used for Sumi-e: the ume (梅), the orchid (蘭), the chrysanthemum (菊), and the bamboo (竹).
Plus the images of water.

Research- Sumie (Suiboku-ga) historical background and technique

It was introduced to Japan in the mid-14th century by Zen Buddhist monks, and grew in popularity until its peak during the Muromachi period (1338-1573).
About Sumie

The famous master is a Zen Buddhist priest Sesshu Tokyo(1420-1506). His unique style is called Haboku, which is a landscape painting that involves an abstract simplification of forms and freedom of brushwork.
About Sesshu
What I learn from his style is to create third-dimantion by the shade and stroke of black ink in a flat 2D image.

Piccures by Sesshu.

The beginning

Preliminary thesis statement: A 1-2 min commercial for a Japanese travel, introducing the traditional beauty of simplicity. It' about a visual expression rather than just a promotion and story.

What I am trying to show (Keywords): Japanese beauty, introduction to traditional culture and nature, Virtue of simplicity, Sumi-e(wash painting), Zen, Spiritual experience through the journey.

One paragraph synopsis: It's opened with a sound of water drop. Single drop of water leads to one stroke of line, and it leads a stroke of a swimming gold fish in a pond. The shot pulls back and shows that it is actually a picture of Fusuma(traditional paper-made door) in a room of temple. Then the shot pulls back from its veranda to show the outside zen garden and entire temple architecture.

Medium: 2D animation stylized in sumi-e + composite with 3D objects (temple and goldfish).

picture is an example of sumi-e.
